The evening activities run Tuesday to Friday evenings between 7pm and 9:30pm (10pm on Fridays), and give the Young People the chance to play pool, table tennis, wii and/or kinect games, eat out, watch tv, dance or just simply chill out on the sofas. The also have the opportunity to talk to Youth Workers for advice should they need or wish. We also run issue based evenings once a month, for example with the police, or anti-smoking groups, which the Young People enjoy, and hopefully learn from.
Why they need our serviceAs an area where individuals are prone to suffering from one or more indicators of social exclusion, the Elgin Youth Café was originally set up in 2001, targetting Young People, to promote Social Inclusion and to give them a place to go in the evenings, with the city of Elgin not offering much in this sense. Furthermore, adult volunteers help the Youth workers each night, offering them some social inclusion for themselves, aid to their job prospects, and some general personal rewards.
Plan and expected resultsJudging by the previous 10 years of this project, which the Café was set up for in itself, we expect the successes to continue long into the future. We currently receive an average of about 70 Young People an evening, with Fridays often peeking at around 100. We have recently started a membership system in thought of maintaining the safety of Young People who visit the café, and the current number of registered Young People stands at 184. We also have a growing number of 25 adult volunteers.
