For the last three years, colleagues in the IHR at the University of Exeter have coordinated a small Christmas present collection for women and children from our Exeter area who have fled domestic violence and abuse and who are having to spend Christmas in a place of safety. While the charities that host these families and run safe spaces make huge efforts to keep some Christmas spirit alive, funds are very limited and most of these families won’t have a gift or anyone able to treat them. Because of Covid-19, travel restrictions and guidance on reducing transmission, we sadly won’t be able to collect physical gifts to pass onto families. Each year, the charities we support tell me the impact our gift giving has had, not just on the families who receive them but also on the staff who delight in brightening their clients’ day.
