A day out for the whole family to Herd Farm Activity Centre, an accessible outdoor centre in Eccup Leeds. Aimed at disabled children with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus aged 10 years and over and their families. A chance to try out indoor and outdoor activities such as Zipwire, giant swing, assault course in a safe manner. Emphasis is what disabled children CAN do. BBQ lunch and help towards transport if equired.
Why they need our serviceFamilies tell us that they need low cost activities that the whole family can take part it. Children with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus and their siblings and parents/carers need to meet with others in a similar situation for mutual support. Families say they are excluded from lots of venues due to poor access/lack of money, lack of confidence. Children need accessible facilities so that they can enjoy countryside/outdoor and exciting activities no matter how disabled they are. .
Plan and expected resultsFamilies having a fun low cost day out where they will meet up with other families in a similar situation. Hopefully, some families will keep in contact after the activity day which will make them feel less isolated. Children having confidence to take part in outdoor activities that they might not have tried before. Disabled adult volunteers being seen as role models. Other volunteers such as university students having fun and gaining useful experience of working with disabled children.
