On 17 November I shall be attempting to run 10k with my son Nick - I would like to think of him as a pacemaker but he will probably be too far ahead for that role. I am getting a bit better time and distance-wise but real effort is required!
We are running to raise funds for West London Welcome which supports refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in our area. Probably many of you will have donated household items or clothing to WLW previously to supplement the bare minimum these newcomers receive. WLW also runs a drop in centre with lunch cooked by refugee chefs, English and other classes, legal and employment advice, some events and a chance to socialise and escape isolation. You may know that asylum seekers are not allowed to work; those with refugee status can do so but often face barriers including language and UK accreditation for the skills they possess. Funds from our run will go to the Study and Training fund which will help to provide materials so that at least those who cannot work immediately can prepare themselves for employment while they wait. We are very keen on this fantastic local initiative and it would be brilliant if you can support us.
PS If you're wondering about the photo these are happy schoolgirls we met in Aleppo 2010, since when their world has been obliterated.
