When I was young, my mum used to be part of what was called the Co-op. It was a community run bi-weekly fruit and veg initiative, set up by parents who came together each paying a membership fee which they would use, to organise bulk deliveries of fresh seasonal produce from a large fruit and vegetable market in Wellington city, dividing it between families in the Co-op into large banana boxes.
Growing up, I didn't always know if we would eat as life was incredibly difficult. But my resourceful mum, somehow always found a way. As a child, I knew things were difficult and we had very little to live on week to week, but somehow, there was always a meal at the table.
From the kindness of people and community of friends we had around us and because of my incredibly resourceful mum being part of the parents run and managed fruit & vege Co-Op, cutting her food back so us kids could eat, to showing me how to cook, bake and grow plants.
These days, I work for FEAST With Us, a food insecurity charity based in London, who take surplus food to cook nutritious meals for people experiencing food insecurity across 15 homeless shelters and community spaces. Last year, we launched a Healthy Eating on a Budget programme, that's building confidence, developing cooking and budgeting skills, creating social connections and helping people feel better about what they can control through new nutritional and food knowledge. It's an incredible programme. See this video for a snapshot.
In September this year, I'm doing something I love, getting into the great outdoors! A few of us are hiking the Peak District Copper Challenge in aid of FEAST. We're a small charity making a tangible difference in people's lives and all the funds raised, will go towards our work tackling food insecurity. Please donate if you can.
Thanks, M. x
