Horizons is a children's sailing charity and our aims are to help disadvantaged and disabled children from the inner city communities of Plymouth. We provide learning and educational opportunities that increase self-confidence and improve social and practical skills, through the experience of water-based activities that would normally be beyond their means.
Our main safety boat engine is becoming uneconomical to maintain so we are now fundraising to replace the engine.
A new engine has been priced up at £12000. The boat is an indispensable asset and is used as a teaching platform and safety cover for all our sailing activities.
Why the community needs us
All of our programmes and activities are designed to boost self esteem, develop self determination and self belief by managing situations they would not normally find themselves.
Our impact on the community
All of our activity programmes do not have to be certificated or outcome based. All activities are child centred and designed to maximise their experience and physical enjoyment, whilst giving them a personal and achievable goal in a safe but challenging environment. We are able to run and to award the RYA Youth and Adult sailing schemes plus RYA Sailability schemes. Enabling young people to progress from complete beginner's courses to the more advanced skills and instructor awards.
