About
UPDATE:I ran the race, and completed the full 100km in one go! Absolutely the most brutal, idiotic, tremendous thing I’ve ever done. It has left me completely broken, but worth it for this amazing charity.

This page will remain open for a few more weeks - please give generously.

The Background

In a fit of moderately drunken hubris before Christmas, I decided to sign up to run an ultra-marathon in July.
Those who know me will understand what a frankly ridiculous proposition this is.
As an (semi) retired prop with dodgy knees and the historical running ability of a one-legged sloth with severe arthritis, the thought of running any distance further than a trip to the bar at last orders would have seemed fanciful.

The Race
The race I have entered is called Race to the Stones. It's a 100km ultra-marathon (running the distance all in one go) with about 3,700 feet of hills to climb for good measure. The route starts in Lewknor, and follows the Ridgeway (an ancient Roman road) to the finish at Avebury Stone Circle (kind of like a budget Stonehenge). More info can be found here.

The Charity

Here's the important bit.
Along with the wonderful (and horrendous) challenge this race and its training will present me, I wanted to raise some money for charity. I decided to support a small charity, Harry's HAT, which was founded by a cricket clubmate of mine and his wife after their son Harry was born with Hydrocephalus.
It's an absolutely brilliant charity, supporting awareness and research into Hydrocephalus, which affects 1 in every 1000 babies born in the UK. Unlike massive charities, your donations won't get diluted through bloated salaries (it is run entirely by volunteers) and other expenses: the money goes where it is needed, supporting the parents of children born with Hydrocephalus in what is an incredibly challenging time for them, and working to make life better for those children. More information about Harry's HAT can be found here.
