Hi Everyone!
On Saturday 5th August I’ll be doing a 5K run that involves getting myself through inflatable obstacles in Tatton (Altrincham). I will be running to raise money for the South Manchester Down Syndrome Support Group (SMDSSG).
SMDSSG is an amazing charity that needs our support. This is a group I feel personally connected to after forming an amazing bond with a little boy called Thomas.
I met Thomas in January 2021 when he was 1. He came in for settles at a nursery I was working in . I was assigned his keyworker as well as been given the SENCO role. The first day he came in, he had a huge smile on his face that lit up the room charming everyone around him. I won’t lie to you, I was nervous at first as I had never experienced working close with a child with Down syndrome but looking back at it now, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Thomas is now 3 and a half and ever since having him from babies , he has helped me gain so much confidence in myself and has taught me how to stand up for myself and do what’s right.
For those who do not know Thomas, he is the most loving, caring, cheeky boy that you could ever meet. He always works hard to learn new things and if he can’t do it, he waits it out and tries it again. He never gives up. The thing I loved about him the most is that he would light up any room he walked into with a lovely big cheeky smile.
Not only did Thomas motivate me to do this run… his mum, Elizabeth also did . On 21st May, Thomas’ mum ran a 10K for SMDSSG and seeing how happy and proud of herself she was at the end really did motivate me.
SMDSSG are a charity that provides support for children with DS from speech therapy, sing & sign to crafting and play. Raising money for SMDSSG will support children like Thomas and this is why I would like to raise money for this charity.
