If you are reading this you probably know that my much loved and much respected father, Mike Ward, passed away in August last year, leaving a massive hole in mine, and many other people’s lives. In the months after his death I decided I wanted to commemorate his life in some way, and came up with the idea of running 8 marathons in 8 months, each one representing a decade of his life.
So…. that’s what I’m doing; I committed to run each marathon in under four and a half hours, and started with the Manchester Marathon (completed in 3hrs 49mins) in April 2014 and will finish with the Lanzarote Marathon in November 2014. In addition to these two events the JMB Ward Memorial Series comprises: the Warwick Shakespeare marathon (April 2014 3hrs 53mins), the Milton Keynes Marathon (May 2014 3hrs 59mins), Stone Flying Fox Marathon (May 2014 4hrs 20mins), the Wolverhampton Marathon (September 2014 4hrs 15mins), the Chester Marathon (October 2014 4hrs 13mins) and the Chelmsford Marathon (25th October 2014, 4hrs 17mins).
** Lanzarote Marathon was cancelled due to the worst weather the island had seen in over 20 years. I will now be completing the series a year later than planned on 12th December 2016 at the Lanzarote Marathon 2056 **
I’m nearly there now, with 7 of the 8 marathons completed, and people have been asking me after each run if I’m raising money on the back of these events. This wasn’t my original intention, this was just a personal thing for me to remember my Dad, but the more I thought about it the more I thought that it would be very fitting to raise money for an organisation very close to my Dad’s heart – Stone Hockey Club.
Stone Hockey Club is a fantastic community organisation, which has been active in Stone, Staffs for nearly 100 years. My Dad was president of the club for over 40 years and I know that he would really have appreciated any donation you could make to the club, as do I.
Thanks for anything you can give – it means a lot.
