In November last year the world lost Kate Mitchell. She was courageous, she was compassionate, she was giving, she was cheeky and funny as hell, she was hard working, she devoted her life to others. She was a North Shields lass and a citizen of the world. She was our dear friend. And she was taken from us by male violence.
In the last weekend of May me and another of Kate's dear friends Simone are doing the London 2 Brighton Challenge in her name. We will walk, trek, skip and at times possibly crawl the 100km over two days to raise money in the memory of our friend who we miss so much and for whom we wish to turn our crushing sadness and anger into something good for causes she cared about. In the name of my charity Landlark, which is dedicated to eradicating and preventing domestic abuse, sexual violence and harassment in all its forms, I will be raising money for Acorns Project, a North Tyneside charity offering a range of services to support families affected by domestic abuse.
Please give what you can to support this amazing charity and all the work it does. I discovered at the funeral that when Kate was younger, growing up in Whitley Bay, she volunteered at a local refuge for those fleeing domestic abuse. That was the amazing thing about Kate. She did so so much; in her spare time and in her job for the BBC working out in countries in Africa supporting local communities, But she never shouted about it. She just got on with it. She saw what was needed and she just got on and did it. All whilst being the most caring, funny and loyal daughter, sister and friend anyone could ever hope to have.
With massive thanks in advance from me, Landlark and Acorns Project xx
