I am running the Reading half marathon on Sunday 3rd April in support of a local charity, Home-start Reading. The opportunity to at last run the Reading Half is a  very emotional one for me as I have been hampered a few times due to factors affecting my own family which meant I have had to cancel running race this twice. Nearly four years ago when our son was 2, I lost my job, soon after  I then lost the hope of us having a second child and I found I had lost my  entire sense of purpose. I consider myself exceedingly lucky to have had the help of a strong network of family and friends to help me through this and thanks to their continued support  I am now thriving and with new energy and renewed sense of purpose. I am very aware that not everyone is as lucky as me and I would really like to help other families with young children get themselves back on their feet. Home-Start Reading  gives families that essential support that they would not otherwise have.
I met with Kathryn , one their amazing members of staff who explained to me how they help families in practical and knowledgeable ways to help parents give their children the best possible start in life. Their trained volunteers work alongside their expert support team to help families with young children, who are struggling due to a range of reasons. The parents may be feeling overwhelmed and isolated and lack the self-confidence and strategies to break the cycle. Home-Start Reading helps to build their capabilities, connections and resilience, giving children the chance to thrive, have a happier future and enjoy the same opportunities as others. The last time I ran the Reading Half Marathon was in 2009 and I am aiming to beat my time of 1hr 56 mins. I am not a natural runner and I am a lot older now so this not an easy goal for me! Please give generously and I will do my best to run fast and not injure myself! Thank you so much, Laura x
