On the 6th of October I'll be running the Cardiff Half Marathon for a wonderful charity called Skills & Volunteering Cymru (SVC). I had the pleasure of working for SVC and saw first-hand the amazing work they do to support some of the most vulnerable members of the community.
SVC run 32 projects which allow volunteers (who can be community members or students) to contribute to their local community by working with those who have learning disabilities, mental health conditions, are elderly or homeless. Volunteers also work with partners on initiatives aiming to make South Wales a greener and safer environment. Volunteers work in many areas including hospitals, schools, farms and community centres. Additionally, SVC works in partnership with the police, the NHS and local government. This academic year 550+ dedicated volunteers committed over 20,000 hours of volunteering, supporting over 13,500 beneficiaries. This year, the economic value of SVC's volunteers was £138,160.
