Sunday the 14th of August will see local hair salon New York's, opening it's doors of it's Bletchley premises to the city's homeless community, as the management and staff spend the day working unpaid, offering a free wash, cut and blow-dry to some of MK's most vulnerable citizens.
The act of charity was the brainchild of Salon owner Christine Spicer. She wanted to find some way to give back to the community and having become aware of similar endeavours elsewhere in the world, Christine decided to utilise her skills as a stylist and with the support of her staff, she came up with the idea of free hair cuts to the homeless.
Christine elaborates, " Something as simple as a new haircut has the power to massively raise a person's self-esteem and I wanted to reach out to the homeless community in Milton Keynes, to offer them some deserved pampering."
As this was a first time venture of this kind for Christine, she called upon the help of MKFM for support. With many contacts across the homeless charity network in the city, I jumped at the chance to offer advice on how best to run the event and started by providing contacts for Christine to liaise with to make the event a success. I thought Christine's idea was so wonderful and I wanted to do my best to support her and her fantastic team in the organisation and planning, as well as the execution of the event on the day itself."
Between now and the 14th of August, Christine will be taking referrals from homeless support agencies and charities across the city, to ensure that those in genuine need get an appointment and not just anyone who wants a free hair cut!
Which leads us to here, local vehicle hire company Limesquare have kindly offered to donate a mini-bus for free, to ferry people to their appointments, but we need to raise £70 to pay for the insurance and petrol.
