Homelessness in Northern Ireland is sadly a situation that touches too many people and families; and it’s not just those experiencing homelessness that suffer the consequences of it.
While I have not experienced homelessness myself, I have learned of the truly devastating impact it can have on anyone, even indirectly.
Anyone who has worked behind a bar will tell you about the stories you hear. One such story however has stuck with me. A regular of the bar that I was working in at the time, told me how he had supported a family member through homelessness and experienced first hand the impact caused by the complex issues associated with not having a permanent, secure place to call home. This is his story.
“I hate to admit it' he told me, 'but I would have been the first person to judge someone sleeping in the streets or an addict. Until a few years ago when I was having to deal with my son battling both! You will think, ‘Oh that’ll never happen to me or my family!’….. and I was like that too. Little did I know.'
The people Shelter NI help are all someone’s son or daughter, someone’s brother or sister; and they all deserve a helping hand in life.
So on 5th of December 2017, I will be spending the night sleeping outside QUB's Lanyon building to raise funds and awareness for the homelessness charity Shelter NI.
I believe that every little helps; and you just never know if you, a family member or a friend will need their help some day.
