Our multi arts, interactive travelling exhibition is coming to Beckton Globe Library Newham in March 2018 for two months, telling little known stories of women, men and children involved in the US Civil Rights Movement and UK and Newham based human rights history. It is a catalyst for education and arts activities. Our partners are Living Song CIC who will work with young artists and community groups to explore international, national and local stories of struggle through creative song making.
Why they need our serviceNewham has one of the highest unemployment rates in London while more than a third of residents who are employees are low paid. Many children and young people, in particular those from BME backgrounds can grow up with few opportunities. They tend not to have access to helpful networks and are often stereotyped because of their 'race', class, gender or faith. We want to boost their confidence and ability to be involved in taking action for social justice. (Photo is of Hasna D at JtoJ fundraiser)
Plan and expected resultsWe aim to galvanise people to take action for social justice. We will develop the skills of young artists from diverse backgrounds and they will inspire and collaborate with other young people. They will be part of a safe, learning and fun environment with a chance to form new relationships, explore and share stories and local history and create poetry and lyrics. Other beneficiaries will be visitors to the exhibition and those who attend our arts and education events throughout the borough.
