MUSIC IN MIND Music in Mind is a service user led project supported by Hillingdon Mind. We began in 2008. The main aims of the group are to learn music as therapy in overcoming mental health issues, improve musical skills and form social networks. You can express yourself either by joining in with the vocals or helping with instrumental accompaniment or if you are up for it, both. But there is room for you to just sit back and listen, if that is what suits you. There is no pressure to take part, but there might be a lot of encouragement. The main instrument played is the guitar, along with vocals. We also try to accommodate all other types of instrument - these have included recorder, bass guitar, drum kit, African drum, keyboard, penny whistle, harmonica, percussion and occasionally a violin. Everyone is welcome, whether you have no experience or have been playing for years. We meet every Thursday at afternoon/evening in Uxbridge, and play a range of different styles, including rock, pop, folk, and reggae. As a service user led project, we have our own constitution and committee members, and independent funding through Capital Volunteering and other sources. So far, we've performed numerous times at a range of events, including at a Diversity day, twice at World Mental Health day, the Uxbridge Folk Club and the Mind Carol Concert. In October 2012 we staged our own concert at Christchurch in conjunction with the Harrow Community Choir. In Jan. 2014 we performed at the Mayor of Hillingdon’s Parlour. In June 2014 a group of us visited Glastonbury Performing Arts Festival. In May 2015 we staged another concert with More than Just a Choir and Upbeat Music Charity. In June 2015 we won a nationwide competition to receive one of 20 Yamaha Clavinovas. In August 2015 we performed at the Elder Stubbs Community Arts Festival in Oxford. In late 2015 we were made the subject of a documentary, made by 3rd year Film and TV students at Westminster University (completed in
