Crossing the thin line between bravery and stupidity gets remarkably easier as the years go by. At 65, one’s mind still thinks it can order the body to do what it did 40 years ago! Before the body has an opportunity to reply with, “you are joking, aren’t you?” or “can we at least think about this for a bit?” – the mind has committed both to another strenuous effort. This time to the challenge of cycling in the desert, (on sand dunes), and along the Skeleton Coast, Namibia. “It will be fun,” suggested the mind. “But I’m the one that’s got to do all the training, so we can cycle 40-50 km (70km at peak), in the gruelling heat,” reminded the already tired body. “As usual, you’re just going along for the ride!” With the training almost done, the trip all paid for, and both arms aching with vaccination jabs, I feel the trip would be somewhat selfish if the opportunity to raise some desperately needed funds for a local charity is missed. The Redbridge Foodbank provides a much needed service in these very difficult times. Most recent data shows that they give an average of 67 parcels each day. The cost of living crisis means that the Foodbank gives out 28% more parcels now than at the height of the pandemic. This appeal is to fund the renovation of a disused space and create a warehouse, which will relieve financial, operational and physical pressure on the charity, meaning it can better target its time and serving those in need.
Success depends upon your generosity. Thank you on behalf of Redbridge Foodbank.
