Leeds Marathon 2024
I am hoping to complete the Leeds Marathon this year in under 4.5hrs having never run this distance previously. I have been training hard over the last few months and hope this will get me across the finish line.
However, my main motivation is that I have decided to run for Sunshine & Smiles - Leeds Down Syndrome Network, a charity which means a lot to me and my family.
My story
I have a very strong connection to Sunshine & Smiles following the birth of my second child, Holly, who was diagnosed with down syndrome post birth in September 2020.
Holly has spent a lot of time in hospital, requires ongoing medical support and further operations in the future. Since birth and throughout Holly's early developmental years the charity has been a great support for both Holly and my family. Whether this is a makaton class, swimming lessons, support and guidance regarding Holly's education or just a network of families in a similar position, they have been extremely important in helping to support my family through the first few years of Holly's life.
The charity helps to provide opportunities for those children born with down syndrome throughout their lives, which they may not necessarily receive otherwise. They offer speech and language therapy, regular groups and activities, individual support and advocacy for families, as well as raising awareness and challenging preconceptions in the wider community.
How we will make a difference
Sunshine & Smiles want to ensure that the support network is sustainable in the long term and that they can continue to provide support and activities to children and young people and their families. To do this they rely on donations, grants and supporters.
