In 2016 at just over 2 years old my twins were diagnosed as autistic. Whilst the diagnosis wasn’t a massive surprise to me,the nature of autism is that you can never be entirely sure how life will look day to day. At that stage I had no idea how difficult the bad days might be,but more importantly how truly incredible the good ones could be either. The overwhelming sense of pride and delight at the achieving of skills and milestones that come so naturally to others.
In 2018 I ran the Cardiff Half Marathon for the National Autistic Society and prior to training for that hadn’t run a step since probably a school sports day 20 years earlier! Next year I take on my first full marathon in Newport and not naive to the challenge I have set myself, when signing up I looked to my biggest inspiration...my children. Every single day they make me proud beyond words, working immeasurably hard to accomplish what can seem the simplest of daily tasks.
They have made incredible progress in the last year and that is undoubtably a credit to their truly incredible school and it’s staff. Heronsbridge School for us,holds more magic than Hogwarts! The progress they are making while being shown kindness, support and endless encouragement by a truly wonderful team of staff brings me close to tears more often than I’d care to admit. The beaming smiles on Rupert and Willows faces every day, going in and coming out tells me all I need to know about this truly wonderful school. I will never be able to show the depth of gratitude for what the school and it’s fantastic staff do - but what I can do is lace up my daps and pound out 26.2 miles for them! Any donations greatly appreciated as I thought a half marathon was a crazy enough idea....now I’m doing this!!
