Swindon 105.5 Chairman and Presenter Nick Stevenson will be attempting to swim 5 kilometers on Sunday 23rd April at the Swindon Marriott Hotel. Nick who has recently returned to the pool after many years will hope to achieve the distance in around 4 hours. He said “I’ve recently started swimming as a form of exercise in order to help with losing weight. There’s a long way to go but it’s a great form of exercise for that and really enjoyable at the same time. Swindon 105.5 relies on grants and donations to keep delivering it’s unique service to the local community and beyond. It’s not only the on air stuff we do – dozens of volunteers join us every year to develop a whole range of skills, including gaining confidence, preparing for the workplace, overcoming adversity, the list goes on. Since I became involved almost 5 years ago, I’ve been gobsmacked at the positive effect it’s had and continues to have on people from all walks of life. If you’ve never had a look at the stuff the Station does, take a look at it’s website. The downside of all this is that it costs to provide such a service. The radio station is a not for profit organisation and is run almost exclusively by volunteers. Even so, currently running costs stand at around £120 a day and our funding depends on the goodwill of companies, organisations and individuals, most of whom come from the local area. When the Station was looking at ways of generating much needed funds, I thought I might be able to lend a hand through my new found love of swimming. Thing is, I’m not the fastest swimmer in the world. I swam a mile the other day and it nigh on killed me, so it won’t be a walk in the park. I’m hoping people will see the value of what Swindon 105.5 does and get behind me
