St Alfege’s Church, Greenwich, is supporting the 999 Club Winter Night Shelter in Deptford again this year by raising funds and providing home-cooked food for every homeless guest staying the night over the cold winter months.
The 999 Club works year-round to help society's most disadvantaged, providing a drop-in on Deptford Broadway, Lewisham, which welcomes 4,000 people each year. Many are helped to find hostels, permanent accommodation, detoxification, rehabilitation, benefits, help with debt, clothes, employment and education.
The 999 Night Shelter is funded by donations and supported by volunteers from the local community. St Alfege’s choppers, bakers, chefs, washing up fairies, and overnight carers all give their time for free. But we need your help to buy ingredients, help with transport and expenses, and the general running costs of keeping the shelter open from December to March.
Last year people like you helped us prepare and serve 3,600 delicious hot dinners and keep the shelter open for longer than ever before. We were also able to increase beds from 25 to 35. Shelter guests got a good night’s sleep in the warm, with a nutritious supper. During the day the 999 Club provides companionship, medical attention, and professional advice. Nearly ninety individual guests were sheltered for different periods during last winter, with 33 moving to a longer-term place to live, helping them off the streets for good.
The St Alfege Cooks need you this year to support this winter’s effort. From Tuesday 14 October, until funds run out, Localgiving.com will be matching one-time donations pound for pound up to £10, and monthly donations up to £10 per month for six months. Regular donations will make sure we can keep going through this winter and in winters to come.
