Our local NHS Mental health team are willing and eager to provide expert personnel to come to First Base one afternoon each week to undertake support sessions with our clients. These sessions will run for ten weeks and they have a well proven track record in this area. Initially, a half day each week will be enough time to cater for the needs for our clients. However the project is attracting new clinets every week and we envisage that we will need to offer a full day a week in the future.
Why they need our serviceMany of our veteran clients need professional help to learn to live with their battlefield memories. The longer they have to wait for this help, the worse the problem becomes. In a perfect world the government they served would foot the bill for trained experts to make life more bearable. Sadly, as we all know only too well, the coffers are empty. This is why we are looking to the community to raise the £5000 we need to be able to provide the help our clients need.
Plan and expected resultsAll too often veterans try to drown their flashbacks and nightmares in a sea of alcohol. Sometimes the drink can indeed block out haunting noghtmares. Other times it does not. Sadly alcohol is lousy medication. It doesn't take long for alcohol to dismantle anyone's life and our veteran clients are no exception. We expect many of our clients to learn new ways of living with their harrowing memories and thereby leave the bootle behind. This process is by no means easy, but it can turn lives around
