Seven Stafford Borough Council workers will be living on £1 a day from Monday (28 April 2014) to Friday (2 May) as part of the ‘Live Below the Line’ challenge.
They will be raising money for local charity, House of Bread, who provide free weekly cooked meals and distributes donated food parcels to vulnerable people in the area.
The seven are John Fraser, Hannah Ziada, Kate Harrold, Alison Poole, Chris Swetmore, Samantha Logan and Gareth Johnson. Some of the volunteers will also be dragging their family members into the fundraiser.
THE RULES
• For the five-day period the volunteers can spend no more than £1 a day on food and drink, meaning that they have a total of £5 with which to buy all the ingredients for their meals.
• The full cost of the all the items they consume must be included in their budget. This means budgeting for whole packets of food items such as rice, pasta, noodles and eggs.
• For items such as salt, pepper, herbs and spice they must work out the cost of each item per gram and budget their shopping proportionally.
• They are allowed to drink tap water.
• They can share the cost of ingredients amongst a team which will allow them to pool together funds and do more with their cooking.
• They can’t grab a cheeky snack from the cupboard unless they include the cost of buying the item new in their budget. They can use food sourced from their garden as long as production costs are included within the budget.
• No combination of meals on any given day can exceed the £1 spending limit.
• They cannot accept donated food from friends, family or the House of Bread! Monetary donations towards their fundraising goals are encouraged though!
