Last year, I volunteered for one of the projects the money from this run will help fund. I was working with women who were recovering from drug and alcohol abuse, many of whom had either been living on the streets or in hostels with limited-to-no access to good food or cooking facilities. We spent a few hours with them each week, teaching them how to bake bread, make simple, affordable and healthy meals. They were all in the process of regaining secure accommodation and a healthier future and the skills we shared with them not only gave them a good start, but the process of cooking together was hugely therapeutic. We completely take the joy eating and cooking can bring for granted. What I love about the work Made in Hackney does is that it connects so many dots and links that are missing in the way we approach food. The key, being community. The money raised from this run helps them reach out to more people sharing essential skills that nourish on all levels.
