Silt and accumulated material will be removed using small excavators. The bed of the canal and the embankments will then be prepared to receive a geosynthetic clay liner which will be laid in 20m sections. Spoil will be used to create bunds at each end which will also be lined. The embankments will be reinforced at the water margins using planted coir rolls which will create a "soft" edging and provide new habitats. Excavated sub-soil will then be replaced over the liner.

Why they need our service

The re-watering of 400m of derelict canal at Bourton Meadow will be a significant step forward towards the Society's long term aim of full restoration of the Buckingham Canal. It will provide a demonstration of the benefits that the canal can bring in terms of being an environmental asset for the community.

Plan and expected results

The towpath, which is a part of the Ouse Valley Way long distance walk, will be improved and hedges on both sides of the canal will be environmentally enhanced. As a result an exemplar length of canal will be created which is close to Buckingham town, on a well-used public footpath, with improved biodiversity.
