We will build on the experience of our frienship groups in primary schools and modify our existing accredited 'Youth Link' projects that recruit, train and support young people as volunteers to mentor other young people in need.
Why they need our serviceThe main reasons children struggle in primary school are poor literacy, numeracy, poverty (free school meals) and born late in the school year. This project will train secondary school students to help primary school children with their reading.
Plan and expected resultsThe reading age of primary school children who are struggling with literacy will improve. Secondary school students will learn new skills and their volunteering activity will improve their employability. 'Transition' of children leaving primary school and starting secondary school will be made easier.
