A partnership with Trinity School, a school for disabled students in Barking & Dagenham, Rising Stars Youth Theatre @ Trinity started in September 2011 and offers extra curriculum drama activities for 16-19 year olds aimed at developing independent living and leadership alongside leadership skills.
Why they need our serviceThere is no extra curricula drama provision specifically for disabled young people in Barking & Dagenham. There are inclusive groups, which don't provide transport or support for young people with multiple needs. The project also fills a gap for a transition service for disabled young people post 16. This support is all the more necessary as the decline in services will mean that disabled young people will be required to function more and more in the community rather than in specialist services.
Plan and expected resultsThrough drama the group explores pertinent issues such as stranger danger, bullying, relationships, conflict resolution and advocacy. These explorations result in the creation of mini dramas which are either performed to their peers and guests or are filmed and used as resources to introduce these issues to other disabled young people both in the school and beyond. Once the group have developed their performance skills these mini dramas will also be performed live to other disabled young people.
