To support our ability to grow mental health Recovery year round, we need a shelter to provide both shade in the summer and protection from wind, rain and frost in the Winter. We run our therapeutic gardening groups throughout the year but we know that people with mental health difficulties can often find adverse weather an additional barrier to attend our groups. A shelter would make our groups more accessible to everyone, no matter the weather. The more that people feel able to attend our therapeutic groups, then the more mental health recovery we are able to nurture and grow.
We have been developing our therapeutic growing site in the grounds of the grade II listed Avon Priory since September 2022. So far we have a polytunnel, 2 greenhouses and a number of raised growing beds, as well as taking care of the 200+ fruit trees in the orchard. What we have realised over the past couple of years is that what we really need is a shelter to be able to run groups in all weathers. Although we run our groups throughout the year, we notice a decline in attendance throughout the colder months, as well as if it is too hot, due to the exposed location of our growing site on a north facing slope on the Polden hills.
What our participants say would help them to attend our groups is if we had a shelter that would provide shade in the summer, and warmth in the winter, and protect from northerly winds. We plan on building a timber construction low impact round house with a clay oven.
A shelter will also provide a private space for 1-1 therapeutic meetings as well as a designated space for our unique Recovery sessions which we share our experiences of mental health difficulties, discuss psychoeducational themes and provide each other with mutual support.
If we successfully raise the required funding then we will build a low impact roundhouse using low impact and sustainable techniques, consulting with professionals such as 'Roundwood' to work on
Planning,
Design & logistics
Structural engineers calculations
Groundworks plan and diagram
Materials and cutting list for timber frame, roof and floor
Wattle and daub walls (hazel and willow covered in cob)
