Fair Treatment for the Women of Wales (FTWW) is the only patient-led third sector organisation in Wales dedicated solely to women’s health equality. It is a not-for-profit organisation, registered with Community and Voluntary Support Conwy, and a member of the Wales Council for Voluntary Action.
I was diagnosed with Endometriosis 3 years ago, after battling with the disease for the majority of my adult life. It is a debilitating and chronic illness affecting at least 10% of women and girls of reproductive age. It is also one of the most poorly understood conditions affecting women, taking on average 7.5 years to get a diagnosis. Women and girls with endometriosis frequently undergo numerous invasive procedures and surgeries with non-specialist clinicians, and endure years of ineffective treatments. In Wales where there are over 150,000 women living with the disease, and only one specialist centre located in Cardiff.
I am fortunate to have been able to access the services of FTWW who have supported, educated and advised me. My engagement with FTWW has enabled me to advocate for myself and to finally access the specialist care I require.
As I approach my 40th birthday on April 10th this year, I am also preparing for radical surgery which will help to improve my quality of life. FTWW have been instrumental in aiding me to reach this stage and nothing would give me greater pleasure than to give something back.
Not only is FTWW close to my heart, I also recognise the important work they are doing to help women and girls of the future, not only in Wales but across the UK. As a mother, this is incredibly important to me. I don't want my own children to suffer the experience that myself and other women of my generation and previous generations have had to put up with for so long.
