Camphill School Aberdeen is charity which supports children and young people - many with additional support needs - to reach their fullest potential. It offers a kindergarten, school and life skills training centre on a day and residential basis for children and young people aged 3 to 25 years.
My 19-year-old son, Seth, has a residential placement at Camphill. Seth is autistic and has ADHD among other needs and since he moved to Camphill four years ago, he has thrived. After finishing school last summer, Seth has moved to the Young Adults Programme where he takes part in a number of fantastic workshops learning new practical skills such as bike repairs, weaving, felting, cooking, gardening, vegetable deliveries and even horse and alpaca care!
CSA aims to raise £10 million to expand the facilities on offer to many more young people. There aren’t many facilities like this in Scotland, let alone the North-east, and there are so many who could benefit if the capacity can be increased.
After the Kiltwalk passed through Camphill Estate last year, Seth became very interested in taking part. I completed the Mighty Stride two years ago with work colleagues and can't wait to walk with Seth and his 15-year-old sister Faye this year and hopefully raise some funds for CSA.
I am so grateful for the support and experiences Seth receives at Camphill. Accepting that a residential placement was the best option for Seth was the most difficult thing I have ever had to do, however it has also turned out to be the best decision I have ever made, as his progress has been beyond what I could have expected.
