I've been lucky to work for NEWCIS for the last two years, during that time I've seen what small pleasures unpaid carers take in their day to day life.
NEWCIS is largest provider of carer services in Wales – delivering information, one to one support, advocacy, training and counselling to carers who provide unpaid support to family or friends. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems.
As part of Carers week 2017 myself and a few colleagues have agreed to cover the round trip of the areas NEWCIS offers a service. We support unpaid carers in Denbigshire, Flintshire and Wrexham, carers who give up so much of themselves to care for their loved one with little recognition of their own wellbeing.
Part of my contribution for the 68 mile challenge is a 5 miles swim. Yes, 5 miles. On June the 17th I shall be donning my swim cap and goggles and swimming the 5 miles in the hope of you lovely people sponsoring me will make it worth while, then i'll attempt a bit of a run and a few miles on the bike. The proceeds of this will go towards the 2017 carers Christmas lunch, The Christmas lunch is a great chance for local carers to get together and have some merriment at a time of year which can be incredibly difficult.
