Silver Cyclist rides are based in local communities in Bristol. Rides follow a gentle and relaxed pace and enable people who may feel nervous about cycling to participate with confidence. They offer a chance for older people to take exercise and stay active, and are a social setting where participants can make new friends and feel part of a community. "I'd never have gone on the road on my own. It gave me confidence. It was smashing its given us a new outlook now we are retired"
Why they need our serviceOlder people can often feel isolated and lonely. Many also struggle to get out and about as much as they would like, often due to a lack of confidence, encouragement or support. Life Cycle's Silver Cyclists project organises friendly, relaxed group bicycle rides for over 55s in local communities. Rides offer participants a gentle but regular chance to exercise and stay active, as well as a welcoming and inclusive environment where older people can make new friends and feel part of a community.
Plan and expected resultsFrom running two existing Silver Cyclist groups in Easton and Bedminster, in Bristol, we know what a positive difference the scheme can have on the quality of life of older people. As well as maintaining the rides for another year in these communities, we really want to expand the programme to a new community in Bristol. We are now trying to raise the funds to set up a new Silver Cyclists group in Lockleaze.
