Mehul & Simon are taking part in the iconic 55 mile London to Brighton cycle ride on Sunday 19th September 2021! Part of the course is an official mountain climb, according to the Tour de France...
"But why?!?"
...is the obvious question. And it's a great question, because neither of us even owned a bike until the last 2 months 😅 We are taking on this challenge in support of the wonderful and important work being carried out by the charity Erase Meso (www.erasemeso.org). Erase Meso are a voluntary community committed to raising funds to research a cure for mesothelioma.
So what is mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a terminal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos dust and fibres. The cancer usually develops in the lining that covers the outer surface of the body's vital organs. If you are diagnosed with mesothelioma you have just a 6.6% chance of surviving, according to the WHO. That’s considerably worse than brain, liver, or lung cancer.
Sadly there is NO CURRENT CURE and treatments are limited. Research and access to clinical trials is improving but desperately needs funding to save lives.
The UK has the highest incidence of mesothelioma in the world, with more than 5,000 people diagnosed each year.
Asbestos related cancer has previously been viewed as “an old man’s disease”, however the numbers of cases continues to RISE. Tragically, we are now seeing this incurable disease affecting more and more young men and women.
And there is a particularly personal connection to this cause. One of the young people that has died from this terrible disease is my brother Oliver James Moran (13/05/1980 - 21/02/2006). As my oldest friend, Mehul stood with me and my family through that dark time. So we ride in Ollie's memory and to raise funds that will help prevent more families experiencing the effects of this cancer.
WE WANT TO ERASE MESOTHELIOMA - PLEASE DONATE WHATEVER YOU CAN TO HELP US ACHIEVE THIS MISSION
Thank you!
