Hi everyone! I'm just writing this a mere 2 hours into a long 10 hour journey up to Cairns! Whilst in cairns I am going to do my third 'face a fear challenge', following my half marathon and my zip wire across the Tyne... I'm going to do a sky dive!! I will be jumping out a plane for an amazing local charity based near Wetherby, called Austin Angels. I have volunteered for Autism Angels for nearly a year now, and I have seen first hand the amazing work that they do and the positive impact they can have on a family or individual.
Autism Angels is a charity which supports the development of children and their families who struggle with the mainstream structures in their life. This could be; school, emotions, routines, or any other activity in which the person finds adversity. Autism Angels work with unique concepts developed by Learning to Listen™ and horses, who provide valuable insights and learning opportunities known as Equine facilitated Learning (EFL). AA work with horses to create ‘real life’ scenarios that can be then practiced and worked through. Horses are reactionary animals and have a range of emotions that create powerful and honest feedback that is immediate.Through unique learning environments we work to empower individuals to be leaders of their own lives. The work the charity offers works to improve; speech and language skills, communication and recognising feedback from others, increasing independence and working with others within the family to show the importance of role modelling and being honest.
Whilst volunteering I also got the opportunity to do some of my own learning, whilst on a coaching programme. Here I learnt the importance of accepting and loving yourself for who you are, and the impact of positive thinking day to day, not to mention so many more life changing lessons which I will take with me forever.
