HERITAGE OF HEREFORD -  'SEWCIAL' STITCHING.
HELP US CREATE THE SMOCK MAKERS DRESS
Please sponsor the project with a cash donation, joining the hand stitching 'sewcial' group itself, or sending supportive emails  - trevor@thebigskill.com - to help with other sources of finance.

Prizes will be awarded for donators, including 20 of whom, who can have their names sewn into the dress itself. One entry for every £5 donated.

Embroidery enthusiasts, whether experienced or complete beginners, will be invited to attend workshops & classes to create their own piece of embroidered patchwork, to be stitched together into the Hereford Smock Makers Dress, which has been inspired by the one made in 1834 by the renowned Herefordshire smock maker Mary Bufton, currently housed at Hereford Museum. https://www.herefordshire.gov.uk/history-lives/museums-collections-search?Id=3209
Like the famous Red Dress -
https://reddressembroidery.com/  this dress, will be created by participants from all backgrounds, cultures, ages, abilities & skills. It has been proven over the decades that the art of hand stitching is a rewarding activity for all ages & genders & has a particular benefit on mental health. Hereford Museum houses rich & exquisite examples of hand embroidery & hand stitching.

This project will open up, to those unaware, the possibilities to discover & learn new skills, through the study & appreciation of these treasures. The heritage & links to those skilled, local seamstresses, will enrich and teach a new generation to sew. For instance, our rural heritage & that link with the land can be found in the stunning collection of farmer’s smocks.

By introducing the importance of hand sewing, honours those who have gone before & those who are to follow us. It is a low impact, low tech activity, requiring the minimum of equipment, but that has a positive impact on the environment & ourselves.

Teaching all ages & genders will have positive long term effects, where an appreciation of the skills from the past will inspire & lead to new ideas & change. This project aims to explore how our forebears viewed the world, what people wore & how hand stitching & embroidery has been used both for leisure & for therapy.

Please help us with this project, either by donating, and/or by emailing your support. Your funds will help us run workshops which will provide the skills to start the process of creating the Smock Makers Dress. Your emailed support will help us with applying for grants.
