Even though it's widely accepted that we are not, we Steves like to think that we are Welsh in a small way. To prove everyone wrong, we are running the length of Wales on Offa's Dyke - ye olde border between England and Wales.
Offa's Dyke is a 175 mile trail from its northern point in Prestatyn to Chepstow in the south and we'll be running the full length, with camping packs, over 10 days in August.
We'll be running around 20 miles most days without a support vehicle across hilly trails and paths and down through the edge of the Brecon Beacons in South Wales.
We are both involved in an organisation called the Manpin Foundation, a group that aims to offer strategic support and financial backing to small charitable organisations in the UK. Through this we have come across the charity Da'aro Youth Project. We think the charity is doing an amazing job with the limited funding it has and hope to raise a bit of extra cash for them by plodding our way through the Welsh hills. Life in the UK can be immensely difficult for young asylum-seekers arriving here without parents or other family. Young people need to adapt to a new culture, while navigating a very complex asylum process at the same time as processing the loss and trauma many of them have experienced on their journeys.
The Injera Club was set up in 2018 by the British-Eritrean community in direct response to three teenage asylum-seekers tragically taking their own lives. Several others have been sectioned and brought into psychiatric care.
With the aim of promoting positive mental health and well-being for refugees, the Injera Club is a youth club which hosts 20-40 young people each week. Over the course of an evening the group can enjoy home-cooked Eritrean food, socialize with others who have shared their experience, talk about their difficulties, or simply relax, hang out and play games.
