On Saturday 5 October I will once again be donning my lycra, saddling up the ironhorse, and riding 100km (62.5 miles) to raise money for the Big Red Bus Club, a family wellbeing centre based near to me in Charlton Park.
The Big Red Bus Club is free to use and runs projects developed by local families. At the heart of the Big Red Bus Club is its daily stay and play sessions for children under five and their families. The stay and play is entirely volunteer run and led. The Big Red Bus Club also run projects that support its whole family approach to wellbeing, including supporting families with children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities; community events; and a whole packed programme of activities that help Charlton's residents be healthy and happy families. You can find out more about it at https://www.thebigredbusclub.com/
Helen and I took both Theo and Sammy to the stay and play sessions for several years; we had a lot of fun, and have loads of happy memories of our time there. Doing this bike ride each year is my way of giving something back to a charity that means a lot to our family, and is incredibly valuable to the parents of Charlton.
The bike ride is a challenging 100km course that goes from London to Kent, into Essex, and back into London. It starts and finishes at the Big Red Bus Club's centre in Charlton Park, and takes in two ferries, Rainham Marshes, the Olympic stadium, and much more besides. To add a bit of an extra challenge I'll be doing it on a bike with only one gear, so no easy get-outs when going uphill!
