In 1996 the day after my 13th birthday I got hit by a car when I was on my push bike. I was straight into a coma for 9 day and in hospital for nearly two months. I had a fractured skull (just above my nose) all the way going up and down my head to the top of my neck also two black eyed the size of golf balls. I lost so much memory so I was basically kinda like back to the age of a 4-5 year old. Some of my family I couldn't remember their names. I had a huge problem on one of my legs because I couldn't 'lift it' when I was walking and I couldn't walk far unless I was in a wheelchair, I had to relearn on writing, reading, maths....everything. I have epilepsy due to the accident.
I have progressed so far and I also consider that the accident happened for a reason and makes me a better person than who I was before
I have never really had many friends because I have always been judged as an 'outsider' and 'unwanted' but I still carried on fighting. Now I have a few friends and people accept me for me and I try and tell others that whatever happens things do improve.
Recently I joined a group (volunteering) where I live that does things for people with head injuries (talks to them, share stories, painting, teach them on basic computer work, play games, go places like bowling, karaoke etc. etc. etc.) and I have found my 'fire from inside me' again. The group is called Headway East Northants.
On 5th September I went into Headway East Northants and I was offered me a job! I was (and still am) shocked not just because I haven’t been into it long but how much positivity I received from them and from the other members of staff and volunteers. It has and will give me a focus and a positive way of moving forward.
Thank you for reading this and I hope you can sponsor me and help me, and all of us here at Headway East Northants, continue to help those who need our support and enable all those affected by brain injury to realise their true potential.
