The Sussex Parallel Youth Games (PYG) is a flagship, Paralympic style event for children with disabilities across Sussex. It is THE event in the schools calendar for the 400 athletes taking part each year, as well as the 100+ young leaders and adult volunteers who make The Games happen. Schools travel to The Triangle, Burgess Hill, in June of each year and compete in Boccia, New age Kurling, Cricket, Tennis, Golf and Swimming. The competition is supported by a Sporting Champion and medals are handed out at the closing ceremony for the winners of each sport. The Event Team, supported by Active Sussex and National Governing Bodies, give their time for free to ensure that the Games go ahead each year and the venue is given for free thanks to a long and positive relationship with Mid Sussex District Council. The children work hard each year to train for the various sports and each child is given a competitor t-shirt and certificate on the day. Volunteers are given lunches and a t-shirt. This event has been lucky enough to survive the last 10 years through many different funding and fundraising routes, but this year I have set the challenge to raise at least £10,000 so that we can see the Games secure until 2020! So this year sees a Charity Gala Dinner and Music Evening on 21st May in Littlehampton and I have set a challenge with my sister to swim the equivalent of Rustington to the London Olympic Stadium, which is 260 lengths each.... There will also be a garden party with singing and cake amongst many other things. Any amount of money that can be given really does make a difference to the children and families involved in this fantastic event.
