On 13th April this year Tara, her partner Becky and Robert will embark on a trek in the Himalayas to Everest Base Camp. This will involve travelling across Nepal before a 75mile trek over rough terrain and arduous ascent of 5364m almost 6 times the height of Ben Nevis!
They chose to undertake this classic trek to raise funds for Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team (DAST) after they helped Tara’s Aunty Trix when she was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer caused by asbestos. Her aunty is one of the strongest and most determined women Tara knows. Her family couldn’t comprehend what was happening when she was diagnosed in 2020 but DAST stepped in and made such a difference with their care, expertise and truly amazing support.
The venture to Everest is going to be challenging for the trio: Tara has knee and back issues which is bound to lead to pain and discomfort on the trek. Becky views the trek as the challenge of a lifetime starting with overcoming her fear of heights, dealing with asthma and not to mention the long mountain treks that they’re doing most weekends as training! Meanwhile Robert is on a quest to find himself through this adventure as well as to support two good friends on this truly life-changing journey. The trio are all united by the desire to experience the mystery, beauty and amazing culture of Everest and, perhaps most importantly, to raise much-needed funds for DAST!
They aim to raise an amazing £5000 to provide invaluable home visits to patients and families. Cancer affects 1 in 2 people and the NHS can only do so much. Charities like DAST step in and provide what the NHS can’t. Please donate, share amongst friends and family to help them smash this target!
