Camphill School Aberdeen is charity which supports children and young people - many with additional support needs - to reach their fullest potential. It offers a kindergarten, school and life skills training centre on a day and residential basis for children and young people aged 3 to 25 years.
My 17-year-old son, Seth, has a residential placement at Camphill. Seth is autistic and has ADHD among other needs and since he moved to Camphill two years ago, he has thrived and learned so many new practical skills.
Camphill is currently in the first phase of a campaign to raise £10 million to expand the facilities on offer to many more young people. There aren’t many facilities like this in Scotland, let alone the North-east, and there are lots of youngsters who could benefit if the capacity can be increased.
Along with some fantastic, supportive work colleagues from Vysus Group, I would like to help with the fundraising campaign and have therefore decided to take part in this year’s Kiltwalk Aberdeen, which takes place on Sunday 4th June. There are two events – 3-mile and 17.8-mile walks. A group of us will take part in each walk.
I am so grateful for the support and experiences Seth receives at Camphill. Accepting that a residential placement was the best option for Seth was the most difficult thing I have ever had to do, however it has also turned out to be the best decision I have ever made, as his progress has been beyond what I could have expected.
