Yes, it's that time of year again... Team Harbour is preparing to take another leap in the dark (well, walk anyway).
20 miles.
In the dark.
Starting from a pub.
What could possibly go wrong?
On Saturday 11th June, a foolhardy group of Harbour staff, visitors and volunteers will set out at 11pm to trek 20 miles of the Ridgeway, said to be the oldest road in Europe...
So, will we be 'dancing in the moonlight' or wondering 'why does it always rain on me'?
Either way, your support will make all the difference, not just to our morale on the night, but crucially to the work of The Harbour Project, a small charity which supports refugees and asylum seekers in the Swindon area.
If we find the walk hard-going, it is as nothing to our visitors' journeys, who have sacrificed everything, and risked their lives, to reach the safety of the UK.
Your donation will go towards our 'Thrive Fund', a new idea which aims to support refugees and asylum seekers in accessing better educational and volunteering opportunities, with a view to enabling them to make use of their skills and qualifications gained in their country of origin. All too often, it's easy for refugees to end up in short-term jobs with no real prospects. Our intention is to help refugees 'thrive not just survive'.
Walkley Walk is organised by Thamesdown Swindon's Rotary Club and their official charity for the event is Brighter Futures radiotherapy appeal, which is raising money for a new radiotherapy centre in Swindon (cancer patients currently have to travel to Oxford). We will also give a percentage of any donations received to this very worthwhile cause.
So by sponsoring Team Harbour, you are in effect helping two causes not just one.
Feeling the love? We hope so. We certainly are!
From our hearts to yours...
