In 2018, the Charity purchased two old chapels in the heart of Llanidloes, to begin a community project. Since the purchase of the buildings, work has begun in transforming the buildings into an Eco-hub from which individuals and organisations can develop new collaborative insights and actions towards green recovery.
This Project will create a boost in community resilience, promote green recovery and offer a wide range of awareness-raising, trainings, events, and learning activities that will give insight to our natural heritage and protection of the environment and biodiversity.
The first step is nearly done, with the restoration of part of the building we have been able to develop an indoor garden, community café and workshop spaces. Further building works on the second story, front hall, second building and range of garages will allow us bit by bit to create more spaces fit to become, exhibition and performance spaces, workspace, studios, an indoor market and even accommodation, creating huge potential for community growth.
A strong focus at the Hanging Gardens will be to provide opportunity, especially to vulnerable and marginalised individuals and their carers within the community. We have already hosted groups for young adults with disabilities to learn new skills, socialise and collaborate on their passions and ideas.
There will be many chances for people to be involved - from planning to delivery of the various projects to simply enjoying the space and its many ongoing activities and events. The recent Pumpkin Festival organised by the Hanging Gardens was a great hit and perfect display of what a powerful driving force the local community is. With over X volunteers and X businesses all collaborating to bring the festival into fruition we were able to see how the Hanging Gardens is the perfect hub for collating and supporting ideas and initiatives to become realities.
For a community faced with ever developing challenges on both global and local levels projects like the Hanging Gardens are essential for developing community resilience, green recovery and enacting positive change. The project will increase the footfall of the town, enhancing all existing businesses in a move towards sustainable and regenerative growth.
We hope in the future to provide training opportunities in start up businesses, workshops and groups surrounding ideas of sustainable living, healthy eating, growing and waste limitation. By creating the physical spaces for social gatherings, performance, workshops, exhibitions and much more we will be able to facilitate the ongoing initiatives and energy of the local community. By building on and uniting this already powerful community we will be able to create a welcoming, creative place for people of every age and background to enjoy and use.
