As many of you know I quite like swimming although I am more comfortable in the balmy waters of a heated outdoor pool in Chiswick than the chillier, murkier waters of the Serpentine. And I had sworn never do another event - ever.
However… it is for West London Welcome. So this is my one last attempt to conquer my fear of other swimmers and the Serpentine swans.
West London Welcome is a community centre which supports asylum seekers and refugees locally. They provide legal advice, housing support, basic essentials, food, activities, and so much more, to help them settle into this great city. My daughter, Maddie, is a long time volunteer with West London Welcome and even set up stand-up comedy workshops there this summer.
I am humbled by the amazing work they do, in awe of the amazing success they have had, and honoured to be swimming in support of them. It’s the least I can do.
And as I am getting creakier by the day I don’t think I’ll be attempting this kind of thing much longer …
