The Travel Club works very simply. A person wishing to take out membership (£5 annual) completes a membership form or telephones the Travel Club Organiser who completes it over the phone (this information is confidential and not passed on to any third parties). The member peruses the scheduled trips in the current Newsletter and selects as many trips as required and telephones the Travel Club to book seats. A pick up time and mutually convenient pick up point is agreed and the trip is booked.
Why they need our serviceThe Travel Club affords mainly older people who cannot easily access conventional modes of transport the opportunity to escape the isolation of their own homes to enjoy the company of other people in similar situations on day-trips and excursions. There is an ever increasing older population in East Durham and the majority of the former mining communities have a larger collection of older people than any other age range. Without the Travel Club these people would not travel on a regular basis.
Plan and expected resultsUp to 400 passenger journeys per week can be undertaken by the Travel Club with members visiting places of interest, natural beauty, shopping venues, locations with art, culture and heritage, markets, the seaside, crafts, events, the theatre, etc. The registered membership continues to grow and currently exceeds 2,000 members of which over 500 pay to retain their active membership which affords them the opportunity to go on trips. The Travel Club is heralded as a great service for East Durham
