The post will provide information which is tailored to the community it is serving ~ taking into account such things as age, gender, ethnicity and/or culture, when delivering health advice. For example, evidence suggests that African Caribbean men living in the UK have a three times greater risk of developing prostate cancer than white men. However, many Afro-Caribbean communities are unaware of this.

Why they need our service

We already know that 20% of all new cancers diagnosed will be urological cancers [kidney, testes, bladder and prostate ]. However, statistics tell us that a bigger percentage of diagnoses of these cancers are in men - with cancers of the prostate and testes - while cancers of the kidney and the bladder affect both men and women. It is also known that some men do not take the same pro-active approach to their health as women.

Plan and expected results

Typically, therefore, the post will initially visit and promote the service in GP practices, schools, colleges, universities, clubs, societies, associations and business - securing a role to work with other key organisations and stakeholders in health provision. Nurses can influence behaviour change and promote healthy living, their input can have a visible and measurable impact at individual and community levels.
