Van Project - Maximising Potential

The 'Beast' as the van is affectionately called has been such a useful addition to Coed Dylan and the work we do with young people who learn differently. We've been able bring in materials for the garden, recycle wood products to upcycle and raise money for the charity by moving peoples' household contents. We've met many incredible people along the way and have loved hearing their stories.

We'd like to see if we can maximise the potential use of the van and make it more eco friendly for the charity and those who visit.

Robbie is turning 60 this year and apart from all the other things he does he wants to find ways of working with those who learn differently ranging from close family to the young people who visit Coed Dylan.

The van provides this in a number of ways. Moving people's furniture - the young people can help him and get paid, going to building sites and recycling the scrap wood - either to be used in our projects, or selling on to builders as 2nd hand wood. More importantly keeping the wood out of landfill. We've managed to keep approximately 10 tons of wood out of land fill and could do so much more.

Then there are the skills they will gain by helping Robbie do what is listed below. Giving them a practical experience with the skills and perhaps finding something they like doing, which could potentially lead to a form of employment.

With family but also, those young people we encounter, we are concerned about their futures and what is there for them once they leave secondary education. This project can help make their future a little more productive and add a sense of belonging to a community.

What we want to do - An Overview:
Make the body of the van look nice again so that we can advertise what we do and also, charge for 'advertising' on the van to local and national companies.

Covert the engine to run on Bio-Fuel - using a two tank system. This would also mean the young people, with Robbie, start to recycle used vegetable oils. Helping the environment, and saving the charity money.

We want to put solar panels on the roof in order to charge the leisure batteries we use on Coed Dylan.

Skills acquired by the young people:
Body work
Welding
Signage design
Basic carpentry skills
An experience of working and being paid and interacting with the public with the van removal work.

This is what we are hoping to do with this project. If you can help, we'd be very grateful.

Thank you,
Robbie, Elen and Dylan
