Pelvic Partnership provides women and healthcare professionals with information about best practice for the treatment and management of pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain, enabling women to access the right treatment.

Why Pelvic Partnership?
Around 20 weeks into my pregnancy I began to experience pain in the joint at the front of my pelvis while walking. Pain increased rapidly, affecting daily activities such as walking, turning in bed, getting dressed, cleaning the house, carrying things etc. I was told by midwives and consultants that this pain was normal, due to hormones causing ligaments to relax and would resolve after delivery. After another 8 weeks I was struggling with work due to constant pain, spreading to the back of my pelvis and muscles in my back. I was no longer able to walk for more than a few minutes very slowly, and sitting became painful. As a fit and healthy person this came as a shock. I found information and support from the Pelvic Partnership website, and sought treatment from a physio from their recommended list. My NHS referral provided me an online group exercise class, mostly of exercises I was in too much pain to complete. By 32 weeks, I was using crutches to walk and required help with most tasks around the house and at work. For the last few weeks of pregnancy I could only sit or walk for a few minutes at a time, having to lie down in between. I could no longer exercise, so learned to swim using my arms and a leg float. A month after birth, pain is now starting to return. I aim to complete the swim with or without using my legs, depending on progress.

Until finding information from this charity, I had not heard of this condition. I was fortunate that I could book to see a physio who understood and could advise ways to manage things. Pelvic Partnership report that this condition affects 1 in 5 pregnant women, and has a huge impact on mental health. Please consider donating to this charity to improve care for women like myself.
