Maurice Rimes plans to walk the whole of England’s South West Coast Path, starting on 31st May 2016, and while doing so highlight the plight of refugees and promote the cause of welcoming them into our first-world societies – particularly in Britain and Australia.
The South West Coast Path is one of Britain’s iconic walking paths. It follows the coast around England’s south west peninsular – the coasts of Somerset, North Devon, Cornwall, South Devon and Dorset. It is 1,014 km (630 miles) long and is very hilly.
Maurice’s target is to take 8 weeks to walk the full distance, but in reverse, from Poole in Dorset to Minehead in Somerset.
The number of refugees around the world is the highest since the 2nd World War, by some estimates about 19 million are on the move or in refugee camps awaiting a return to normality in their homeland or resettlement in another country. It is a staggering humanitarian crisis. Maurice sees enough parallels between the images of these homeless people walking for their lives and his planned coastal walk, that he wants to help.
Indeed, Real Australians and Brits Say Welcome!
