We want to be able to provide small welfare grants to help families cope with additional costs related to disability e.g hospital visiting costs (one 10 year old boy with SB/H has already had 60 operations), driving lessons for disabled person, specialist equipment that is not provided by statutory agencies, much needed holidays for families. All applications for welfare grants are considered by at least 2 officers of North & West Yorkshire ASBAH

We know that families with a child or adult with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus are financially disadvantaged. Individuals with the conditions find it hard to get and hold on to jobs due to ill health/frequent hospital admissions and carers find it hard due to their caring responsibilities. There are extra costs related to disability. Research by Contact a Family has shown that it can cost up to £180 when a child is in hospital. Children with SB and/or H often spend many weeks in hospital.

Less financial hardship. Families would feel better supported and get the holiday, equipment etc that they need. Life is tough for disabled children and adults and a small grant can make a huge difference to their day to day lives.
